At approximately 2345 hours on January 27th Newark firefighters in the 5th battalion responded to a building fire on Market St. at Adams St. Upon arrival Battalion 5 (Chief Sereico) reported heavy fire showing 1st and 2nd floors of a vacant 3 story ordinary building. A second alarm was transmitted and the building became well involved in fire. Multiple deck guns, ladder pipes and exterior handlines were put into operation to knock down the heavy fire. A collapse zone was established due to structural instability. The fire was placed under control with 1 hour however companies remained on scene extinguishing hot spots and standing fire watch. No injuries were reported at the scene. A Signal-100 (Arson) was transmitted and will be investigated by the Newark Fire Department Arson Squad.
