At around 5:40 A.M. New Vernon firefighters responded to 7 Featherbed Lane near Village Road on a working house fire. Mutual aid was called to the scene from Green Village, Chatham Twp, and Bernardsville. Cold weather and water problems hammpered firefighting efforts. Tanker shuttles were used and companies drafted from cisterns to supply the scene with water. Heavy fire conditions raced through the dwelling despite firefighting efforts. The fire took two hours to bring under control. One occupant of the home was transported to the hospital with lacerations after breaking a window to escape the fire.
