At around 0920 hours Stanhope firefighters responded to 10 High St. on a structure fire. Upon arrial units found a working fire in the basement of a 2.5 story frame dwelling built in the 1840's. Mutual aid was immediately called from Netcong, Byram, and the Budd Lake fire departments. The fire extended through the balloon framing to the upper floors. Heavy smoke pushed from the dwelling as firefighters tried to gain control of the fire. The incident commander withdrew firefighters due to the rapid extending fire and tactics were changed to defensive for s short time. Additional mutual aid was called into the scene from Roxbury, Flanders. Andover, Hopatcong, and Hackettstown. The stubborn fire took hours to bring totally under control.
